SEVERE WINTER STORM ALERT 2026

Mayor Albio Sires and the Board of Commissioners want to make residents aware of a severe winter storm expected to impact our area. Please take time now to prepare.

**Prepare Ahead**

❄️ Charge phones, power banks, tablets, and rechargeable lanterns
❄️ Fill vehicle gas tanks
❄️ Keep some cash on hand (small bills)
❄️ Refill prescriptions and essential medications
❄️ Download movies, books, and maps for offline use
❄️ Choose one warm room to stay in if power is lost
❄️ Locate your breaker box and water shut-off valve
❄️ Set refrigerator and freezer to colder settings

**Water & Pipe Protection**

❄️ Drip faucets on exterior walls during freezing temperatures
❄️ Open sink cabinets to allow warm air circulation
❄️ Disconnect and cover outdoor hoses and faucets
❄️ Know how to shut off water if a pipe bursts
❄️ Fill containers or tubs with water for basic needs

**Food & Kitchen**

❄️ Keep 3–5 days of no-cook food
❄️ Have a manual can opener
❄️ Stock shelf-stable or powdered milk
❄️ Freeze water bottles to help keep food cold
❄️ Limit buying perishables right before the storm

**Heat & Home Safety**

❄️ Gather blankets, sleeping bags, and warm layers
❄️ If using a fireplace, ensure the chimney is clear
❄️ Never use generators or grills indoors or in garages
❄️ Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
❄️ Use flashlights or battery lanterns instead of candles

**Travel & Vehicles**

❄️ Avoid driving once freezing rain begins
❄️ Bridges and overpasses freeze first
❄️ Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle
❄️ Replace wiper blades and top off washer fluid
❄️ Expect possible travel and flight disruptions

**Power Outage Planning**

❄️ Unplug sensitive electronics
❄️ Keep a battery radio or weather app for updates
❄️ Use surge protectors when possible
❄️ Know the location of local warming centers
❄️ Keep refrigerators closed to maintain temperature

**Pets & Animals**
