About WNY Police Department

The Town of West New York, incorporated in 1898, is located in Hudson county, New Jersey. West New York has a population of approximately 50,000 and a land area of approximately one square mile. The West New York Police Department is tasked with keeping one of the most densely populated towns in the country safe. In the early beginnings of the town, the embroidery industry was a vital economic force that drove the town to prosper. As times changed and the embroidery industry departed, West New York became known for its Shopping District and the development of the waterfront community which attracted many new residents due to its close proximity to New York City.

As the town continues to develop and grow, the West New York Police Department is committed to keeping its community safe.

The West New York Police Department currently consists of approximately 125 officers and 14 civilians.

Drunk Driving Enforcement starting August 17, 2024

“Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes; that’s one person every 39 minutes. About 31% of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. In 2021, 13,384 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths, a 14% increase from 2020. These deaths were all preventable.

In order to try to prevent these deaths and other risky behaviors on our roads, our Department will be conducting a Drunk Driving Enforcement detail starting this weekend, August 17, 2024, from 0000-0400hrs. The detail will run on weekends through labor day. The enforcement activities are aimed at preventing drunk driving and raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.”

West New York Police Department and the use of Body-Worn Video Cameras

The West New York Police Department is committed to transparency and accountability through the use of body-worn video cameras by our officers. As part of our dedication to effective policing and in alignment with guidelines set forth by the New Jersey Attorney General, these cameras are being deployed to enhance public trust and ensure the safety of both our officers and citizens.

Body Worn Camera (BWC) footage functions similar to recordings from cell phone cameras, where the cameras, affixed to an officer’s uniform, will capture interactions within their field of vision. This proactive measure aims to strengthen community partnerships and uphold the highest standards of law enforcement practices.

By interacting with our officers, individuals acknowledge the potential recording of such interactions for transparency and public safety purposes.

Please note that on Thursday, July 4th, several streets will be closed in West New York and other municipalities within Hudson County. Kindly factor this into your travel arrangements to avoid any inconvenience.
